THE
DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

The devil stood on the side of the
road, leaning against a fence post, smiling at me. My first thought was to turn
and run; but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. I continued walking, a
blank stare on my face.
“Hey, Jake, long time, no see,” he
said, stepping forward. “Mind if I walk a spell with ya?”
“Do I have a choice?” I asked
coldly.
“Now Jake, don’t be like that.
After all we’ve been through together, all the good times we’ve had, I though
we were friends.”
“We’ve never been friends and
never will be.”
“Jake, you got me all wrong. I’ve
never wanted anything but to see you get what you want and be happy. Don’t
blame me if what you want and what makes you happy cuts against your grain.”
We walked down the road without
speaking. A mile or so up the road, on the opposite side of the road, going in
the opposite direction, was the young Miller boy. His books under his arm, on
his way to school, he took no notice of us. Then he stopped, looked down at the
ground; his eyes went wide. He bent down, picked something up, and tucked in
his pocket. A joyful look came over the boy.
“What was that he picked up?” I
asked.
“Oh that,” replied the devil. “He
found himself some Truth.”
I laughed. “Truth…I guess that’s tough luck for you.”
The devil laughed so loud it was a
thunderclap; it scared the willies out of me.
“Oh don’t worry about that, Jake.
You see, I’m gonna help him organize it.”
